About William Grose Park
A Piece of Seattle History
Originally known as 30th Avenue Mini Park when it was established in 1970, this modest green space in Seattle's Madison Valley neighborhood was renamed in 1983 to honor a truly remarkable individual.
William Grose wasn't just any historical figure - born in 1835, he arrived in Seattle in 1861 and became a pioneering entrepreneur who helped shape the Central District's African-American community from the ground up. If you take a moment to find the dedication plaque, you'll learn that Grose was the "first person of African descent to own property in East Madison / Seattle, 1882" - a simple fact that opens a window into our city's complex past.
What You'll Find
Situated at the corner of 30th Avenue and East Howell Street, this pocket park offers a gentle escape from the surrounding urban landscape. It's about the size of a residential lot - small, yes, but sometimes the best things come in modest packages.

The rolling green lawn creates a natural gathering space, while a large evergreen tree stands sentinel, offering welcome shade on sunny Seattle days. A short paved path meanders through the park, connecting two entry points and ensuring accessibility for everyone, whether you're pushing a stroller or using a mobility device.
Why Visit
In a city that's constantly changing, William Grose Park offers something increasingly precious - a moment of pause. Several benches invite you to sit for a while, perhaps with a book or just your thoughts for company.
While you won't find playground equipment or sports facilities here, what you will discover is a tranquil spot to breathe a little deeper. It's the kind of place locals cherish for a quick lunch break or a peaceful detour during a neighborhood walk - a small but meaningful green refuge that honors both history and community in one quiet corner of Seattle.
