About Homer Harris Park

History and Significance

Before becoming a park, this spot was part of a larger property owned by William Grose, an early Black pioneer who purchased it from Henry Yesler back in 1882. That connection gives the park a special place in the history of Seattle's African American community.

Today this cozy half-acre green space pays tribute to Dr. Homer Harris, a remarkable figure who made his mark both as an athlete and physician in Seattle. The park was established in 2005.

Park Features

At the heart of the park sits the thoughtfully designed Unity Plaza, a gathering space that brings neighbors together in this Central District gem.

Planning an event? Make a reservation at this park

You'll discover picnic tables and a barbecue grill that make this spot excellent for lunch dates or small family get-togethers. There are also open lawn areas where you can spread out a blanket and enjoy a lazy afternoon.

Keep in mind that as a lot-sized space, amenities are modest but functional, with several bench-table combinations for seating. The tree coverage is limited, so you might want to bring a hat or sunscreen on those rare sunny Seattle days.

Art and Views

What makes this park special are the decorative statues that tell the story of Dr. Homer Harris's life and achievements. These artistic elements do more than beautify the space - they connect visitors to an important chapter in Seattle's history.

From certain vantage points in the park, you can catch glimpses of Lake Washington and the majestic Cascade Mountains in the distance - a lovely natural backdrop to this urban retreat.

Accessibility

Street parking is quite limited around the park, as most spaces are taken up by residents living in nearby homes and apartments. You might want to consider walking, biking, or public transit when planning your visit.
