About First Hill Park
Location and History
Situated in one of Seattle's most densely populated neighborhoods, First Hill Park is a pocket-sized urban oasis spanning just 0.25 acres. Established in 1987, this little green retreat sits at the corner of University and Minor Streets, right next to the historic Stimson-Green Mansion. It functions as a small community space in this busy neighborhood.
2021 Renovation
In early 2021, this compact park got a much-needed facelift thanks to community involvement. The renovation wasn't just about making things prettier - it was about creating a more functional space while keeping that intimate garden vibe that fits so well with First Hill's character.

The redesign introduced a winding seat step that curves through the park, creating a natural border for a small but versatile lawn area. This open space might be modest, but it's great for impromptu gatherings or simply spreading out a blanket on a sunny Seattle day.
Design Features
Look down and you'll notice the herringbone-patterned permeable pavers - a thoughtful nod to the original brick design but with an eco-friendly twist. These pavers actually help manage stormwater, allowing it to filter naturally into the ground rather than overwhelming the city's drainage system.
Rich plant beds add splashes of green throughout the space, softening the urban surroundings. One particularly welcome addition is the water fountain and bottle filling station - a practical touch that saves you from having to duck into a café when you're parched during your park visit.
Amenities
While compact, First Hill Park makes good use of its limited footprint. You'll find picnic tables and park benches scattered throughout, excellent for enjoying a takeout lunch or diving into a good book. The design thoughtfully incorporates both sunny spots and shaded areas, so you can find your preferred setting depending on the weather or your mood.
Just be aware that there are no restrooms within the park - you might want to plan accordingly before settling in for a lengthy stay.
Art and Attractions
One of the park's standout features is a charming bronze sculpture by artist Georgia Gerber, added during the renovation. The artwork creates a whimsical scene: an Edwardian chair and ottoman (referencing the neighboring mansion's history) shared with two playful bear cubs. It's a delightful surprise that brings a touch of storytelling and character to this small space.
Community Value
In a neighborhood where green space is limited, First Hill Park offers a surprisingly peaceful atmosphere - a little breathing room amid the urban density.
