About Marshall Park

History and Location

Before becoming the Marshall Park we know today, this spot went by "Phelps Place" and was where locals would come to soak in the views, even before Queen Anne Boulevard got its glow-up. In 1960, the park was renamed to honor the Marshall family.

Marshall Park is a little green space spanning just 0.78 acres in Seattle's Queen Anne neighborhood. Though small in size, this urban retreat offers a tranquil atmosphere and sweeping views of the city and surrounding landscape.

Scenic Viewpoints

A highlight of the park is the Betty Bowen Viewpoint, added in 1977 - 1978. From here, you can gaze out over the sparkling waters of Puget Sound and take in the majestic Olympic Mountains rising in the distance. The impressive view often causes visitors to pause and take in the scenery.

Scattered throughout are several benches where you can plop down and soak in those panoramic vistas. This spot is considered one of Seattle's best locations to watch the sunset over Puget Sound, with colorful displays of orange and pink hues.

What many visitors miss is the unsigned artwork embedded in the concrete walkway. Keep your eyes peeled for pieces by Pacific Northwest artists like Guy Anderson, Kenneth Callahan, Morris Graves, Victor Steinbrueck, Charles Stokes, and Margaret Tompkins - a little cultural easter egg hunt amid your nature walk.

Visitor Experience

Unlike some of Seattle's more touristy spots, Marshall Park typically maintains a peaceful vibe. You can actually hear yourself think here, with plenty of space to breathe and take in those postcard-worthy views without fighting through crowds.

The park welcomes visitors throughout the day, so whether you're a morning person looking to start your day with some fresh air, an afternoon reader seeking a quiet bench, or a sunset enthusiast, you'll discover your moment here. Just a heads-up - the walk through the neighborhood to reach the park can be a bit steep, so maybe leave your flip-flops at home.

Surrounding Area

Right across the street sits Parsons Gardens, another pocket-sized park famous for its gorgeous magnolia trees. Together, these two green spaces offer complementary natural settings in the heart of Queen Anne.

The surrounding residential area features some pretty impressive homes that add to the overall charm of the experience. And if you're a dog parent, you'll appreciate the pet-friendly paths that make this an excellent spot for your daily walk with Fido.
